Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

  • Monday, October 19 - 1:00 p.m.

“I wasn’t born and raised to be a Kyoto geisha…I’m a fisherman’s daughter from a little town called Yoroido on the Sea of Japan.” Please join Bull Run’s favorite afternoon book club as we discuss Arthur Golden’s fascinating first novel, Memoirs of a Geisha. The novel chronicles nine-yearold Chiyo’s life after she is sold into slavery following her mother’s death through her transformation into Sayuri, a most beautiful and accomplished geisha. Golden’s simple and elegant prose gracefully captures Japanese culture and produces a plausible female protagonist from a now vanished world.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

  • Monday, November 16, 1:00 p.m.

Please join us to discuss Sara Gruen’s romantic page turner, Water for Elephants. Gruen’s bestselling novel is an enticing blend of history, adventure, mystery, memoir, and love story which is revealed as the  nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski recounts the wild and wonderful years he spent during the Great Depression with the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. The novel is Sara Gruen at her best with old fashioned storytelling that is both well researched and compelling. Who hasn’t wanted to run away and join

the circus, if only for an afternoon?
