Back by Popular DemandJazz the Music of AmericaJazz is an uniquely American form of music born in the Deep South. This new music took the country by storm, flourishing in the sprawling cities of Chicago and New York. Jazz continues to grow and evolve with the changing times, creating a variety of sub-genres and launching many successful musical careers. These genres include Dixieland, dating from the early 1910s and a variety of Latin-jazz fusions such as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian Jazz from the 1950s and 1960s. This vibrant form of music continues to move with the times, celebrating the variety of cultures present in America. Join us as local jazz musicians perform concerts highlighting the many varieties of jazz. Light Refreshments will be available after each concert. Registration in person or by phone begins at the hosting library one month before the concert date.
Funding for these concerts and the “Jazz: The Music of America Series” is being provided in part by the Friends of the Library. These performances have been arranged through the offices of the DC Federation of Musicians, AFM Local 161-710, and by the Recording Industry through the Music Performance Fund. The sales of Compact Discs and Cassettes generate funds that make these free concerts possible.
